The Great Wall ⚔️

#vivirloparacreerlo #adiosaldivodejuarez #juarez #senosfuejuangabriel

You know when someone throws out some ridiculous idea and you agree without really thinking it through? Well that's how I got up here. My friend Jerome is an avid runner, to the point where he's logged in more marathons than I have fingers and toes including counting the ones on my twin brother (I don't really have a twin, but you get my point). Not only is he a marathoner, he's gone off to do even sillier races like extreme ultra-marathons. Anyway, one day he looks at me and says you should do this race with me, it'll be fun. Without thinking to much I say "OK", I'm living in China right now and this will be a great way to see bits and pieces of it. Plus to run on the Great Wall of China, what an amazing experience. Don't get me wrong it was amazing, more amazing than I can describe but clearly I had no idea what I signed up for. Prior to this the longest distance I've run was about 10km (approx. 6 miles). I'm a relatively decent athlete, in fact, I even ran track in high school, however high school was 20+ years ago. Anyway, Jerome maps out a novice training schedule for me, and while it was difficult, it didn't break or deter me in anyway. Having said that, I was still working of the premise that ignorance is bliss. You see we where training in Shanghai where it as flat as Kansas. Since this was my first race I didn't understand the importance of elevation changes and undulations on the race route. Come race day, immediately after flag off we hit a 3km flat surface that transitioned to another 3km of a 15 degree slope. I'm feeling good and thinking this isn't so bad than...bam! The gates of the Great Wall. A series of monstrous serpentine routes of uneven steps and undulating brick. To make things worse, at the 30km mark, the race planners thought it would be hilarious to put a 2000+ step accent! That's where I snapped this picture. Not sure what this dude was doing up there but I'm sure he was thinking "silly laowei (foreigners), they had no idea what they were in for". Little did I know that my first marathon was considered the 5th most difficult in the world. Ignorance is bliss.#greatwallmarathon#igtravel#greatwallofchina#natgeotravels

Os caras correram mesmo os 42km vestidos de rinoceronte! Mas não me passaram, mesmo porque se isso acontecesse, seriam menos 2 na face da terra, e olha que estão em extinção! Brincadeira! Save the Rhinos! Tem mais história com esses caras, mas não da pra contar aqui! 😜 #savetherhinos #greatwallmarathon2016 #maratonagrandemuralha2016 #voucorrendo #correrpraver

Don't know where the time goes, it's already been a month! This was after waking up at 3am and taking a two hour bus ride to the wall with an hour to go before the race. Since my body is functioning on the Dubai heat, it was a freezing 15 degrees that morning. @manirostom I see you 😀.

Conquer the Wall post #6 --------------------------------------------
I stood in a queue to paint The Egyptian Flag on my face that morning at 720am . It was a long, international queue. I was anxious;my stomach was running and I was feeling uneasy.
At the Paint-A-Flag counter , the Painting lady (let's Call her that) asked me which flag I wanted. I honestly debated between Egypt, Kuwait & UAE. I'm a Third Culture Kid & although it drives me crazy sometimes &I feel lost all the time not feeling like I belong anywhere in the world, I feel proud I'm a little bit of every culture I grew up around and if I would go back to choose, I wouldn't change anything at all. #Egyptian, born &raised in #Kuwait. Grew up in International British Schools. Residing in the beautiful #UAE.
I decided I'd go for Egypt on the spot, as I already was carrying the Egyptian flag on me , my parents are Egyptian, I have an Egyptian passport, and when shit hits the fan, Egypt will be the only country in the world that will accommodate me with very open arms. Against All Odds.
I said "Egyptian Flag,please."
Painter lady :" Sorry miss , We don't have Egypt."
Me: " what how come? 😳"
Lady : " Egypt never participated before miss."
Wow. I was drained and charged with so much positive energy at the same time. So I wasn't going to run around with the Egyptian Flag. But I was going to make history as perhaps the First Egyptian woman to attempt #China Wall. Represent Egypt. Show the world what our Flag looks like.
Yay Mani. You go girl.
When I finished round 2 of the wall, it was downhill from there , around 5 Km back to the finish line.
I remember shutting out ALL voices until I saw the 41st Km sign. Wait what?!!!! Really? I still had 1.2km only? That's it?!!I immediately reached to my flag and got it out . ⚡️I wore it like that on my back. It was electric. ⚡️The race was electric. ⚡️I was electric. I think I must have run at 4.5min/Km - 5min/Km pace that last Km. I was on fire. I was making history. Not a big deal for some. For me it meant the World. I represented. There now will be An Egyptian Flag to paint on Egyptian Runners' faces. Go #Egypt #masr #تحيا_مصر #rememberingJB 🇪🇬

Conquer The Wall Post #5 Part II (please scroll down immediately if you're getting tired of this😫)
-------------------------------------
Km 36/37 : Thoughts : I've got this but wish I was 10kilos lighter.
Feelings : Superwoman vibes about to kick in. -
I had finally managed to get a hold of my dad. I spoke to him panting while going up.
First thing he asked : خلصتي؟انتي فين؟ "مال صوتك؟
Me : "لا لِسَّه، فاضلي 6Km. "

So basically he asked where are you, and how far in was I.
I said 6Km to go.
Dad : ok that's ok. امشيهم بقي🙊🙉🙈 and take it easy. (Walk those remaining 6km- he said)
Me: ok dad love you. 😂Akeed I wasn't gonna walk the rest but you get that boost of energy. -
I then realised 2 things happened.
-
One I recharged tremendously knowing someone was virtually going to be at the finish line waiting for me, rooting for me. -
I decided to put 2 songs on repeat for the rest of that distance.
Jason Derulo ~ if this ain't Love (why does it feel so good?🤔 #relate
Rihanna ~ This is what You came for (hey this is what I came for)
-
I switched on Autopilot/ Superwoman mode. My legs were really fine at that point
-
I was going to get through this.
-
It was like 1pm and sun was really strong. Hey I'm the girl who had just run in 40-degree weather just a week before☀️🔥🔥 The Heat WAS NO PROBLEM AT ALL 🔥🔥🔥 I saw strong atheletes falling down on the wall and pouring water all over their heads. I was on fire, and started to over take them all. That gave me so much mental strength.
But then this happens 🙈🙉🙊 -
Western Stranger : "How come you're not hot?"
Me : "Excuse me? " ~ (I'm thinking who are you? What are you? What's this?🌚) Stranger: "I mean your layers. You're wearing Layers. Long sleeves and head cover. "
Me: "I'm Muslim. I'm a #Hijabi. I cover😫."
Stranger : "oh."
Really "oh? " Did it not occur to you? 😫😫😫😫😫
Please don't ask that question. Ever. Not 37 km into a #marathon. To a #Hijabi.Ever.Don't do it. It's #Dangerous. -
What I thought of doing to this annoying stranger who had the energy and audacity to check me out and voice it, kept me going. Yes I did overtake him. 👊🏻

A look up at the steps on the wall during the Great Wall Marathon on my first time on the wall - about 5 miles altogether was run on the Huangyaguan section of the wall, a few hours outside of Beijing. About 2.5 miles at the start and then again after we already ran about 21 miles!!
