Since Im not feeling good enough to get on a boat to try and find the invasion of blue whales in the Monterey Bay, I’ll just reminisce on my first and only blue whale I’ve ever seen 🐋 05.08.2016

In #MontereyBay National Marine Sanctuary, you can find 34 species of marine mammals -- can you name them all? We'll give you a start: one of them is the blue whale. These enormous whales can weigh 400,000 lbs, making them the largest animals ever to live in our planet's history. They also have impressively loud voices: their low-frequency sounds can travel hundreds of miles in deep water!

I grew up endlessly watching David Attenborough documentaries that I’d record on VHS. I wanted to be a zoologist and study animals in the wild (until realism set in). So it was an absolute dream to kayak around Monterey Bay, CA, and watch the sea otters among the kelp. Getting caught up in a sea lion fight that rocked my kayak was another matter... #RobsTravels #travel #instatravel #travelgram #travelphotography #traveling #lonelyplanet #montereybay #california #nature #seaotter 🇺🇸

I’m Thankful for the opportunity to have had such a wonderful trip to #CA. My last traveling adventure until 2018. I have some epic events planned 😀. I’m soaking up the last hour outside at this beautiful location before heading home. I love the beautiful pink medals and shirts we received for the #MontereyBayHM @bsimevents @bibrave @garminfitness @bocogear #oceanchallenge #monterey #bibchat #beatyesterday #oceanvibes #womensrunning #optoutside #ambador #pacificgrove #resultsstarthere

Our passage from San Francisco to Monterey Bay was pretty spectacular - whales (including a sleeping one within a few feet of us!!), dolphins, and then, as we arrived, jellyfish! A really lovely comfortable afternoon of sailing was followed by a bit of motoring, then some fairly wild upwind sailing which kept us on our toes. It was beautiful to get some shelter as we approached to take down our sails and watch these beautiful creatures all around us #jellyfish #montereybay

This isn't the best video because I shot from my phone and I don't really have my sea legs yet but I'm still ecstatic to share it. While whale watching this past weekend my husband and I were lucky enough to witness several humpback whales fending off a pod of orcas (killer whales). They seemed to be trying to protect the carcass of whatever the orcas had killed. The humpbacks surfaced over and over again and made a trumpeting sound with their blowholes which can signify distress. The #humpbacks continued to intervene and prevented the #orcas from preying on a small sea bird that was nearby. Apparently humpbacks have been studied attempting to foil killer whale hunts for years.

Lift off! 🐬 This Risso's dolphin was spotted leaping through the waves in #MontereyBay National Marine Sanctuary. Risso's dolphins are easily identifiable by their white scars, which may be made by other Risso's dolphins or by squid, their preferred prey. These dolphins feed mostly at night, hunting squid that move toward the surface.

Hey All...this is such a worthy cause, please support!!! Think about all the beautiful creatures that are harmed because of our disposable waste. Let's make a change and hopefully plastic straws and other products will just cease to exist before our wildlife does 🐢🐟🦈🐠🐡🐳🐋🦆🦅🦉

Happy Jellyfish Day! It's not hard to tell how this egg yolk jelly got its name. 🍳 The "yolk" of this jellyfish is actually its reproductive tissue. Its thin white tentacles can hang up to 20 feet below the jelly's bell, creating a drift net that can capture its prey of other jellies. Egg yolk jellies are found in many national marine sanctuaries; this one was spotted in #MontereyBay National Marine Sanctuary.

Cozy in a dry suit and enjoying the silence of my rebreather, I sat on the bottom as hundreds of brown sea nettles pulsed past me like a wave of animated gelatin. It was hypnotic and easy to lose track of time and space. These jellies show up in late summer as the plankton bloom peaks and continue to grow throughout the fall until the first big winter storm dashes most of them upon the shore and pulls the rest out to sea.

Not every creature in the ocean is cute and cuddly – some are downright spooky! Anglerfish like this one in #MontereyBay National Marine Sanctuary lurk in the dark, waiting to lure prey in with the light atop their head.
Are you wearing an ocean-related costume for Halloween? Let us know in the comments!
