On world refugee day I’d like to share this memorial tile I made for a school project. It is called ‘Man of Flowers’ and it is about Salim Kyawning, who threw himself under a bus on Manus Island rather than continue to live in hopeless limbo. Another victim of Australia’s racist and cruel policies. The copper tags hanging from the tile are some of the labels he was reduced to in our care... refugees are dehumanized by the generic terms used to describe them in reports and articles ... rohingya, asylum seeker, father, detainee, illegal etc. so many labels and none of them describe the person. His friends on Manus called him ‘Man of Flowers’ I believe, so that is what I have given him in memoriam. Vale Salim and I’d also like to remember this week’s victim of the same policies, Fariborz, the young Iranian man who killed himself on Nauru. Our terrible policies are killing people. Real people. Not just a list of descriptions. Real human people. We have to hold our politicians accountable and demand change.
