Like every year, we are organizing a Christmas party to thank you for being part of the Philomena’s family! We will be hosting the party on Wednesday 20th of November and we sincerely hope you can join us.
This year, we are proud to be supporting Elouise (Kieran’s daughter) in her 3 week long volunteer project in South Africa. We are inviting you to come and have a great time with us and give in aid of this life-changing project. Here is a some further information about the project:
My name is Elouise and in June 2020 I will be travelling to Cape Town in South Africa by myself to volunteer with Global Vision International (GVI) for three weeks! GVI focuses on high quality and high impact conservation and community development programs worldwide which operate under the direction of the local community and at their request. They invest the time to ensure the impact and results achieved meet local community requirements.
What will I be doing?
During the school holiday period (late June and early July), all of GVI’s South Africa projects come together to work at a local library to provide a safe and educational space for underprivileged and vulnerable children of all ages, meaning we do a range of activities to cater for everyone. These include arts, craft, reading, tutoring, sports, health, and confidence building among other things. Volunteers are also responsible for running a soup kitchen for the community during this time.
During term time I will be tutoring in an educare centre with younger local children aged 3 to 6. This involves hosting educational workshops and co-ordinating classes with educational games. Song and dance and arts and crafts will also be worked into the curriculum meaning children will be having fun while learning. Promoting physical activity and well-being will also be a priority of the project. Examples include running hygiene and basic nutrition workshops. South Africa has one of the highest infant mortality rates in the world, meaning access to such information could save lives. Elouise will be present on the 20th of November to talk to you in more depth about the project and why it is so important to her.
