Photo by @chamiltonjames / Charlie Hamilton James - Kauai with his pet monkey. Like many indigenous people in the Amazon, the Awa keep pet wild animals and seem particularly fond of monkeys. The monkeys are usually acquired when the parent monkey is shot for food and the baby is kept as a pet. The monkeys are much loved and often spend much of their day sleeping on people's heads especially when they are you like this one. The women in the group tend to be more monkey oriented and their monkeys go everywhere with them. Check out our Instagram today for more on the wonderful Awa. Shot on assignment for @natgeo

Photo by @FransLanting Everyone lucky enough to make contact with a mountain gorilla comes away with a powerful feeling of kinship. I captured this silverback in a pensive mood as he was sitting hunched during a downpour in the highlands of Rwanda’s Virunga Mountains, one of the last strongholds for these remarkable great apes. This image is featured in our new book “Into Africa," which is based on our @NatGeo exhibition of the same name. Follow me @FransLanting for more intimate images and videos that confirm the fundamental kinship we share with all great apes. @thephotosociety #Gorilla #MountainGorilla #GreatApes #Rwanda #wildlife

Exploring Time: Savannah Dusk | Photograph by Mattieu Rivart (@matthieu.rivart.official)

“Photographs have a special relationship with time. The very process of making an image involves time exposures of shorter or longer durations – and the end result is a moment of time,” writes @natgeo photographers Diane Cook and Len Jenshel (@cookjenshel). “For our Your Shot assignment we want you to delve into describing the idea or concept of time. We are looking for images that encapsulate time, defining what a particular hour of the day looks like, tells a story about time, or captures a moment of time that clearly shows what life looks like at - say midnight, or 5:00AM, or noon. With clarity, coherence, and a point of view, show us a segment of life that defines a specific time, in the cycle of a 24-hour day.
The goal of this assignment is to publish a final story, with a full 24 hours in the life of our Your Shot community. What moment, scene, or activity tells us what a particular hour of the day look like? How do you frame it, what details are important to include?”

Jared Kreiss (@j_kreiss ) ran down to the beach to take this photo of a surfer and his beloved pup heading toward the waves. “Cherish all moments,” says Jared. “There is so much to be thankful for.” #WHPthankful

This image by photographer @beverlyjoubert of the Klipgat cave is a view of an ancient cavern within Grootbos Nature Preserve. The cave was formed millions of years ago by the power of erosion that was caused by underwater aquifers, rising sea levels and the force of pounding waves. #photooftheweek #cave #erosion #nature
