I photographed this little pink skunk clownfish and some grey reefsharks in the Koro Sea, Fiji for @natgeo. Everyday is a good day to celebrate the importance and beauty of our marine worlds! Oceans cover 71 percent of the globe, and they are as important to us as they are vast. Our oceans are home to most of the life on our planet and play a central role in the world's natural systems, like regulating our climate, absorbing carbon dioxide and they produce over half the oxygen that we, and all other land animals, breathe. Their wealth is truly beyond comprehension. Please support organizations like @wwf @redlist_of_ecosystems , #balticsea2020 , @oceanconservancy, @seashepherd and @mission_blue to help protect our oceans. #ocean #protect #nikonambassador #conservation #wwf #oceana #fiji #protectbiodiversity #mattiasklum #conservation @thephotosociety @irisalexandrov @natgeo @alexandrovklumofficial @mattiasklumcollection

An orphaned baby orangutan reaches curiously for my camera in Central Kalimantan, Indonesia. Thousands of orangutans are cared for by hard working, compassionate people trying to give this endangered species a second chance. I have a great job, people tell me. I get to see the most incredible places on this planet. I get close to fascinating species of all kinds. But I obviously get to see the flip-side of the coin... My partner @irisalexandrov and I get to experience destruction and horrors first hand. What truly gives us hope is meeting and working with people commited to helping people and nature. People all over world doing amazing things to secure a better future. The orangutan is Asia’s only great ape. Orangutans only live on the islands of Borneo and Sumatra. Today, both Sumatran and Borneo orangutans are threatened by extinction. Laws and regulations alone are clearly insufficient to protect this unique species. Orangutan conservation requires comprehensive and integrated efforts by all stakeholders, both in the field and in the political arena, to ensure its success. Please help protect the orangutan and the rainforest for example by supporting organizations like WWF or BOS and by sharing this message! Stay away from products containing uncertified palmoil! Hvítá (white river) is a gorgeous Icelandic river that begins at the Hvítárvatn glacier lake on the Langjökull glacier in the highlands of Iceland. The river flows for nearly 40 km (25 mi) before plunging down into a dramatic gorge at the Gullfoss waterfall. #mattiasklum #nikonambassador #alexandrovklum #mattiasklumofficial #iceland #gullfoss #protectbiodiversity @alexandrovklumofficial @irisalexandrov @mattiasklumcollection @natgeo @thephotosociety

Morning in Danum Valley, Sabah, Malaysian Borneo shot on assignment for @natgeo I was 20 years old when I first ventured into the rainforest of Borneo. That was in 1988. Since then I've been there over 40 times. It still fills me with awe and great humility everytime I work on Borneo. Remarkably diverse place! #borneo #danumvalley #malaysia #nikonambassador #wwf #conservation #mattiasklum #rainforest @natgeo @thephotosociety @irisalexandrov @alexandrovklumofficial

This young mountain gorilla in Rwanda carefully studied my face for a long time. It's equally fulfilling every time I get a chance to approach a group of mountain gorillas in their environment. These primates are still critically endangered and only approximately 880 are left in the wild in the Virungas. They are powerful, intelligent and pacifistic all at the same time but they need help to survive! Maintaining a sound population of mountain gorillas and keeping their forests in balance is actually the best way to secure long term stability for people, nature, climate and the region's economy. #mountaingorilla #instagram #instagood #photooftheday #virunga #protectbiodiversity #nikonambassador #alexandrovklum #mattiasklum #beauty @natgeo @thephotosociety @irisalexandrov @alexandrovklumofficial @mattiasklumcollection

Aerial photograph over the Baltic Sea, I'll argue, one of our World's most beautiful seas, appreciated by far more than the 90 million people living around her. However, the Baltic sea is also one of the most vulnerable and pressured marine ecosystems on the planet. Overfishing, eutrification, and chemical pollution... But there is still so much to cherish, love and protect! I have, along with my beloved partner @irisalexandrov and the @tierragrandefilms team followed life around the sea on assignment for #balticsea2020 for our upcoming film. Our second major production dedicated to this amazing sea! Stay tuned! #mattiasklum #nikonambassador #alexandrovklum #baltic #balticsea2020 #protectbiodiversity @tierragrandefilms @irisalexandrov @alexandrovklumofficial @mattiasklumofficial @natgeo @thephotosociety

One of the things I love about photography, and art in general, is that it can be endless, borderless and playful. It becomes a way to live and see. Lines, light, shapes, contrast, nuances, textures and color (or not). Timing and rhythm. It's addictive and highly contagious! Once you get sucked in it's hard to get out...#fineart #fall #life #contagious #sweden #alexandrovklum #mattiasklum #funkyart #nikonambassador @natgeo @thephotosociety @natgeotravel @mattiasklumcollection @alexandrovklumofficial @irisalexandrov

I filmed this female polar bear and her cubs in front of the massive Nordenskiöldbreen in Svalbard, Norway. Summertime sun never really sets in Svalbard. However light is softer and even more gorgeous at night. I usually choose to work "night shift" also since the polar bears (and other species) tend to be more active during night hours. This adaptation is surely because both ringed seals and bearded seals are more active at night. But "day and night" does not mean that much in the Arctic where there are 24 hours of daylight in summer and 24 hours of darkness during the cold winter. The polar bear is a great ambassador for a resilient future where we care about our environment and our common future! #nikonambassador #protectbiodiversity #svalbard #polar #polarbears #arctic #savingthearctic #climatechange #expedition #mattiasklum #cubs #mom #predator @irisalexandrov @mattiasklumcollection @alexandrovklumofficial @thephotosociety @natgeo

Early morning at the glacial lake Jökulsárlón on the edge of Vatnajökull National Park. This lake quite recently became the largest on Iceland since glacial retreat extended its boundaries. I took this picture of The Milky Way Galaxy from the Makgadikgadi Pan, a salt pan situated in the middle of the dry savanna of north-eastern Botswana. The Milky way is really our home galaxy in the universe. The centre of it, which is located about 26,000 light-years from Earth, contains at least one supermassive black hole. The Milky Way began forming around 12 billion years ago! Makgadikgadi Pan is one of the largest salt flats in the world. The pan is all that remains of the formerly enormous Lake Makgadikgadi, which once covered an area larger than Switzerland, but dried up several thousand years ago. To stay over night out in this arid wilderness listening to lions and brown hyenas in a distance is nothing but spectacular! Makgadikgadi And the Milky way, magnificent and extraordinary to watch every time!! I love the facial expression of this Asiatic lion male that I photographed in Gir Forest National Park, India. To me he looks like a dethroned king. It took me a year and a half to get a special permit to explore the entire Gir Forest—and really no time at all to see why these lions became symbols of royalty and greatness. Most people might think of lions as strictly African cats, but ten thousand years ago lions spanned vast sections of the globe, and so did obviously people, who—as we multiplied and got increasingly organized—put immense pressure on competitors at the top of the food chain. Now lions hold only a small fraction of their former habitat, and Asiatic lions, a genetically separate subspecies that split from African lions perhaps 100,000 years ago, hang on to an almost impossibly small slice of their former domain. India is the proud steward of these 400 or so lions, which live primarily in this 560-square-mile (1,450-square-kilometer) sanctuary in Gujarat. We must not forget to protect Asia's Last Lions and big cats everywhere! Please support WWF. A room with a view! Sometimes you have to travel far and work really hard to get a certain photograph.
