“Two years ago, her father used gasoline to burn their house in a moment of anger. Mai Dieu suffered severe burns, approximately 60% [over her body]. Doctors were forced to cut her legs to save her life. Because of her appearance, she was worried and frightened to go to school,” writes Your Shot photographer Sơn Trương. “Thanks to her teacher’s love and her friend’s encouragement, Mai Dieu now communicates with her friends easily and expansively. In her opinion, her teacher is not only a second mother, but also the biggest love of her life.”

“On December 19, 2011, the @unitednations General Assembly adopted Resolution 66/170 to declare October 11 as the International Day of the Girl Child, to recognize girls’ rights and the unique challenges girls face around the world.” The mission is “to help galvanize worldwide enthusiasm for goals to better girls’ lives, providing an opportunity for them to show leadership and reach their full potential.”
