National Geographic

Video by @ChristineEckstrom and @FransLanting While a first-time mother chimp we knew as Nickel takes a midday siesta with her newborn baby, a young male named Mike edges in to them. He expresses his affection for the baby by kissing her and stroking her head. Female chimps with infants tend to be protective and guarded around males, but Mike’s attitude was so affectionate that he was tolerated by Nickel—she trusted him enough to fall asleep. Within chimp families relationships between individuals are as unique as they are in human families.
