Photo by @edkashi The ancient Maras Salt Ponds in the Sacred Valley of the Incas, 1999. The structures are essentially fed by one subterranean stream. The water runs into these shallow pools, evaporating to leave a thin crust of salt. In March of this year, LiveScience reported that a group of researchers at the Planetary Science Institute, a nonprofit of scientists studying planetary systems, proposed that sprinkling large amounts of salt into the atmosphere could stave off climate change. Because salt is highly reflective, they propose that it could potentially reflect sunlight back into outer space, helping to cool the Earth. Not knowing how the salt properties would change, and how much would be needed are a couple reasons why the research continues. #everydayclimagechange #ECC #actonclimate #climatechange #climatechangeisreal #saltponds #Peru #stream

[ #TBT From May 24, 2017 ] Top Shot: Rain Delay | Photograph by Moin Ahmed
“I was taking photos and waiting for a moment [at Tongi Railway Station in Gazipur, Bangladesh,” writes #YourShotPhotographer Moin Ahmed. “A train from Dhaka, heading towards another district, had stopped at the platform for five minutes to pick up passengers in the down pouring rain. Suddenly I found a pair of curious eyes looking at me through the window, and on his left, an umbrella opened for protection from the rain. I got the moment.”

Top Shot features the photo with the most votes from the previous day’s Daily Dozen, 12 photos chosen by the Your Shot editors from thousands of recent uploads. Our community votes for their favorite photo from the selection, and the Top Shot is showcased on the @natgeoyourshot Instagram account.

Slicing, sizzling, smoking — Laurel Driskill (@sugar_boogerz) cuts through meltable objects with a hot knife and revels in the results. “It’s seriously so fun,” says Laurel, a 24-year-old student of painting and animation who lives in Massachusetts. “It keeps me young. I love when my grocery basket is full of crayons, glitter and Play-Doh.”
Laurel turned to creating her #ASMR videos (that’s autonomous sensory meridian response, when certain sounds and visuals cause relaxing tingling on the head and neck) while she was going through her divorce. “I needed an outlet: something to focus on that was outside of myself and that gave back to the world,” says Laurel. “I get messages all the time saying thank you and expressing gratitude for making my videos. My ASMR journey is an example of a very good thing that came from a really bad thing.”

Photo by @amivitale. Giraffe keeper Lekupania and two orphaned giraffes whose lives he saved at Sarara Camp (@sararacamp) in northern Kenya. The giraffes come back to Sarara, which sits on the 850,000-acre Namunyak Wildlife Conservancy and is owned by the Samburu community, every morning to check in with Lekupania. Twigs, the oldest giraffe, was found upside down and stuck in an erosion gully and immediately rescued by the community. Both giraffes have been successfully introduced back into the wild. Current estimates are that giraffe populations across Africa have dropped 40 percent, plummeting from 140,000 in the late 1990s to around 85,000 today. To learn more about incredible conservation efforts in the area, follow and come visit Sarara Camp (@sararacamp) and nearby Reteti Elephant Sanctuary (@r.e.s.c.u.e). Saint-Petersburg Catherine Palace is definitely worth visiting if anyone comes to Russia. This amazing palace was bombed during the World War 2. Its famous Amber Room was dismantled and eventually disappeared during the war. Before it’s loss it was thought to be an “Eights Wonder of the World”. We were super lucky to have this place just for us for this photo as usually it is packed with people.
❝¿¿What is your choice of the Eights Wonder !? ❞
