Father Adam B. Carrico

Jesus said to her, ‘Do not hold on to me, because I have not yet ascended to the Father. But go to my brothers and say to them, “I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.” ~ John 20:17

The Ascension of Our LORD often reminds us of that all too familiar feeling of grasping - reaching for something to cling to, a comfort to remind us that we have not been left alone. We, of course, are not alone, CHRIST remains active in the world, especially through the HOLY SPIRIT alive and well in the Catholic Church.
.
On this mothers day, perhaps we can all look to our universal mother, Mary, the mother of our GOD and mother of the Church, for reassurance. Each of us is loved by our mother, even if and when their human failing disappoint; but that love points to something pure - the love of a perfect mother, a mother without sin, without fault, without failure to distort that love.

In the iconography of the Ascension of the LORD, Mary, the mother of JESUS, is often a central figure. Her presence is the presence of reassurance. When the disciples and Apostles are obviously bewildered and confused Mary remains calm, as any practiced mother would do, all to remind her children that the Ascension of CHRIST is not the abandonment of CHRIST.
.
We cling to HIM, but never so tightly that we lose sight of our confused and bewildered sisters and brothers here in our midst.

Wow, every so often you read something that really clicks with you that you needed to enter your mind. I really appreciate this, “We cling to HIM, but never so tightly that we lose sight of our confused and bewildered sisters and brothers here in our midst.” That is absolutely beautiful and so so true. Thank you for that.
