This image is from the cover story of the first issue of Far & Away, a new magazine that brings together the photojournalism of National Geographic and the reporting of The Wall Street Journal.

Ahmed Sulaiman Aladwi @horse_life95 riding Alreem at Bahla horse festival, Bahla, Oman.

Unlike Western saddles, Omani saddles have no stirrups making a manoeuvre like this much more challenging.

The horses ridden at Bahla festival are a variety of breeds- Anglo, Arabian, English and Desert breeds (a mix of local Arabian mares with an english blood line). Photographed for Far & Away, from @NatGeo and @WSJ

@binging_brunsh

Awesome capture !

@kt.coho

@lkimhill74280 Horses wouldn't exist without humans, you can't say something isn't normal just because it seems strange to you. I've seen foals sit that way, and known adult horses that do too, because just like most animals they have personalities and quirks.

@kt.coho

@lkimhill74280 Oh lord. Have you ever actually been around a horse? Seen one? Because I have! I've spent countless hours around them, ridden them, and helped train them, and I've never been able to convince a horse to do something it didn't want to. They aren't slaves, they're companions and partners. Some people are cruel, but the vast majority that work with horses treat them like royalty.

@kosiej3

Pragtige perd..

@lkimhill74280

@kt.coho yeah ok. I don't have the patience to coddle your ignorance. These horses are completely broken spirited and will do any single behaviour due to cruelty and domination. Did you see the post of the horse "sitting" like a dog? Think thats normal? ! Do your own damn research and you won't be so ignorant.

@lkimhill74280

@kt.coho naive girl...."looks fine", is far from fine. If you doubt me so much research it your own self. The practices to "train" these beautiful animals are horrific and completely break their spirit. Horses do not perform this litany of behaviours without fear and torture. Have a little common sense, or maybe you are just totally ignorant to the horse world. In any case, the pics are sad and disgusting. But for the human, much ego.
