I worked for National Geographic (@natgeo) covering the aftermath of the nearly three-decade conflict in Sri Lanka. Follow @amivitale for more uplifting stories from around the world.

Sri Lanka is a densely populated, seemingly idyllic island in the Indian Ocean finally emerging from decades of a brutal civil war. Today it is known for its beautiful white beaches, wildlife and culture. The hope is that it can move forward and begin to solve some of the issues of postwar reconciliation, a story I covered for National Geographic (@natgeo). A wonderful country ... Especially Jaffna β™₯️β™₯️

Beautiful place and people

I went here in 2013 it was beautiful and friendly but with a dark past, i made friends with an 18 year old boy with a large scar running down his face. He was nice and respectful, but eerily quiet he could be standing behind you and you would never know it, later i learned he was a child soldier and had killed many the scar was a result of his time spent in the war.

The pic gives joy
