“Of the 20+ tropical storms that I saw from space, Maysak was by far the most impressive because that that huge, well-defined eye. It was a contradiction to see such a beautiful storm, knowing it would be so dangerous to people down in the Western Pacific and Philippines.” - @astro_terry

“A new moon rising over the Pacific Ocean, with thunderclouds visible reaching 10’s of thousands of feet up into our atmosphere. I wonder how many planets in the universe would have a similar view of their own moon.” - @astro_terry

“My last photo taken in space- after 199.5 days in space I wanted to capture one more great sunset. After I saw the image on the camera’s preview screen I knew that I’d never take a better photo, so I downlinked the photo and went down the our Soyuz spacecraft and flew back to Earth a few hours later!” - @astro_terry

Today is a special day! National Geographic sent a special package on a trip to space!
.
What is it? National Geographic is sending a Virtual Reality camera to the Space Station to document what life above Earth is like. The camera, the VUZE from HumanEyes, will provide a 3D 360 view from inside the Space Station. ESA Astronaut Palo Nespoli will be our VR director and cameraman, using it to tour the various modules, show the famous copula view of Earth, and give viewers a sense of what it’s like to live on-board. Over the course of filming, Paolo will be working with ground control to downlink footage back to Earth where it will be incorporated into a VR short film that will be accompanying the premiere of “One Strange Rock” in 2018. #OSR

Unsung Hero: My Grandmother | Photograph by Davide Pischettola
.
“When I started taking pictures about seven years ago, I was with my grandmother; she was 90 years old and needed help,” writes Your Shot photographer Davide Pischettola. “My first trial shots, first portraits, and later first stories were on my grandmother. She was my source of inspiration. When she cooked and knit, she taught me how to do it. When she told me about how she met my grandfather, it stimulated my curiosity. Everything she did was inspiration to me.”

Unsung Hero: Brothers | Photograph by Alejandro Peña

“Marines assigned to Mobile Assault Platoon, Regimental Combat Team 7, pray before departing Camp Leatherneck in Helmand Province in Afghanistan,” writes Your Shot photographer Alejandro Pena. “These Marines recited Psalm 91 before every mission. I have never experienced camaraderie like I did with the Corps, and I doubt I ever will again. Shared adversity creates strong bonds.”
