Did you know that the lions of Ishasha, Uganda are one of only two populations of lions in the world which actively climb trees? Here are three members of a pride of lions which regularly climb the branches of large sycamore fig trees (Ficus sycamorus). Some think this behavior is to avoid the irritating tsetse flies which bite them, others think it's to keep cool in the heat of the day. Maybe they just like to hang out and look over their vast territory. Why do you think lions climb trees in Uganda?

Follow @natgeowild and @alexbraczkowski for more shots of the incredible tree climbing lions of Uganda.

Photo by @alexbraczkowski | African lions in southwestern Uganda have learnt to climb trees and if you drive through Queen Elizabeth National Park you could be lucky to see four, five or even more lions hanging from the branches of sycamore figs and acacia trees. It is thought that these lions climb trees because they're trying to evade the tsetse flies in the grass, are cooler in the canopy or use trees as a vantage point. What do you think the reason is? Follow @natgeowild for more shots of tree-climbing lions and other awesome wildlife.

Video by @bobpoolefilms | Lions reinforce family ties by nuzzling, rubbing, and in this case a lot of licking. Lionesses tend to lick each other a lot more than males; the reason is related to mothering behavior. Their lives are hard, and creating strong bonds among the pride members helps with their chances of survival. . . . . .

A diver's sharp eye was able to catch a venomous stingfish disguising itself as part of the sandy seabed in the Gulf of Aqaba, between Egypt and Saudi Arabia. Known as the two-stick stingfish, the sea creature would use its camouflage to ambush unsuspecting prey. However, it would also display its colorful fins as a warning to potential predators. Diver Vital Bazarov stated that it was unusual to spot the stingfish during the day since the species are normally active at night.

UNTAMED TAKEOVER | 🎥 by @filipe_deandrade A Tufted Tube Blenny is on the search for a tasty meal. Also known as “the fish with a bad haircut” these beautiful creatures take up residence in abandoned worm tubes and are incredible to see on a dive. While filming humpback whales in Costa Rica, I came across blennys and was totally distracted. After spending an hour with this wonderful creature I started calling him Rodrigo. You can visit Rodrigo and his friends in Cano Island. | Join @filipe_deandrade and the Untamed crew throughout the weekend as we go LIVE with some of Costa Rica’s captivating wildlife. #WILDUntamed

UNTAMED TAKEOVER | How @Filipe_DeAndrade Got The Shot: Cocos Island is famous for its variety of shark species. To show this shark haven, I wanted to capture hammerhead and Galapagos in the same shot. Sometimes you have to let the wild be wild. To capture them in their natural ecosystem, I dove down with a GoPro and left it at a popular shark site. We’ll let this shot do the rest of the talking. | Join @filipe_deandrade and the Untamed crew throughout the weekend as we go LIVE with some of Costa Rica’s captivating wildlife. #WILDUntamed

UNTAMED TAKEOVER | These iconic rain-forest amphibians sleep by day stuck to leaf-bottoms with their eyes closed and body markings covered. When disturbed, they flash their bulging red eyes and reveal their huge, webbed orange feet and bright blue-and-yellow flanks. This technique, called startle coloration, may give a bird or snake pause, offering a precious instant for the frog to spring to safety. | Join @filipe_deandrade and the Untamed crew throughout the weekend as we go LIVE with some of Costa Rica’s captivating wildlife. #WILDUntamed

UNTAMED TAKEOVER | Join @filipe_deandrade and the Untamed crew throughout the weekend as we go LIVE with some of Costa Rica’s captivating wildlife. | These Humpbacks are powerful swimmers, using their massive tail fin, called a fluke, to propel themselves through the water and sometimes completely out of it. These whales, like others, regularly leap from the water, landing with a tremendous splash. Scientists aren't sure if this breaching behavior serves some purpose, such as cleaning pests from the whale's skin, or whether whales simply do it for fun. #WILDUntamed

Cockatoos share a surprising characteristic with humans - musical drumming. While studying wild male palm cockatoos, National Geographic grantee Robert Heinsohn discovered the birds use rhythmic drumming to attract mates. Each bird seems to have its own unique style of drumming with repeating patterns. Some of the birds even use tools to drum with, the only reported species other than humans to do so.

A rare ocelot was filmed by a camera trap in Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge in Texas. By studying the wild cat's spots, rangers were able to identify it as a previously unknown adult female. Ocelots are considered endangered in Texas. Hundreds of hammerheads! @filipe_deandrade and the Untamed crew dove to the depths of underwater mountains to document hammerheads and other shark species in Cocos Island, 500 kilometers off the mainland of Costa Rica. Hammerheads migrate through these warm waters and usually travel in schools, which is highly unusually for most sharks.
