Photo by @CarltonWard // Caladesi Island has been an inspiration to me since childhood. I grew up on the Gulf Coast of Florida near the city of Clearwater amidst the most densely populated county in the southeastern US. Caladesi was, and remains, a last remnant of nature amidst a landscape completely consumed by human development. I later learned that my great grandfather helped save Caladesi as a state park in the 1960s. After becoming a photographer in collage, Caladesi was the first place in Florida I pointed my lens, and I can now clearly see how the island shaped my career and purpose for saving wild Florida. Standing on the north end of Clearwater Beach beside the Gulf of Mexico, it is my favorite place to watch the full moon rise above the pines as palms. #caladesi @fl.stateparks #floridawild #keepflwild #gulfofmexico #moonrise. Here, a woman in Les Cayes, Haiti, stands among trees ravaged by the 2016 hurricane.
Last November, I photographed the aftermath of Hurricane Matthew in Haiti for the August issue of National Geographic. There, the combination of poor sanitation with a natural disaster caused the remnants of cholera to surge. (Cholera was brought to Haiti by UN peacekeepers after the 2010 earthquake in Haiti.) #haiti #hurricanematthew #sanitation @noorimages

Elephants in the Storm | Photograph by Bjorn Persson (@bjornpersson_photography)
“I ended up in a big sandstorm in Namibia. The air became pure white, creating an almost unreal light. At some point, I could hardly see my hand in front of me,” writes Your Shot photographer Bjorn Persson. “When the elephants appeared, they looked like ghosts.”

“Bjorn, as you confirmed to me that little post processing had been applied to this image, I can only congratulate you — it is stunning! Well done. Great work.” — @natgeo photographer Charlie Hamilton James (@chamiltonjames) #YourShotPhotographer

We’re jumping for joy with today’s #BoomerangOfTheWeek. Teresa Argudo (@chu_morr) captured this lovely leap of her daughter’s new rhythmic gymnastics team. “After three months training together, this #Boomerang was made after her first participation in a local festival.”
Add #BoomerangOfTheWeek to your next Boomerang. It might show up here on @instagram.
