Did you know that seagrass beds store ten times more carbon that tropical forests? Over the past two weeks much attention has been paid to marine conservation and I have been very proud to be part of many of those conversations. Blue economies, as they are called, include the determination by signatory countries to the UN Convention on Biological Diversity, to protect 10 percent of our oceans by 2020. Many nations around the world are feverishly working to meet this lofty goal; one that will go a long way towards abating some of the worse effects of climate change, while ensuring the ecological integrity of marine ecosystems like this sea grass bed I photographed in the Mosquitia region of Honduras, continue to play the important role of acting as our planet’s carbon sinks.
