Congaree National Park is one of the lesser known gems of the National Park system. A paddle down the Congaree River feels like a swamp but is actually an old growth forested floodplain, an incredibly haunting place (in a good way). After three hours kayaking we encountered at least two dozen snakes basking along the shore and overhanging branches. Can you guess what kind of snake this is?

Photo by @FransLanting Palm trees dot a savanna in southern Madagascar. Once this great island supported an amazing cast of animal characters from pygmy hippos to giant tortoises with lemurs the size of gorillas and flightless elephant birds mixed in. They disappeared after humans colonized Madagascar some two thousand years ago. In many ways Madagascar is a microcosmos of our planet in peril. Follow me @FransLanting for more images from this remarkable Island.

“In my late 30’s, my wife convinced me to put aside my career as a firefighter/medic and return my original aspirations as a professional photographer. Given my interest in non-traditional photography, the transition has been difficult to say the least. I’ve been tempted to give up a number of times, and my wife refused and helped me push forward,” writes Your Shot photographer Darryl MacDonald. “I now work full-time as a photographer. This is one of the many images taken around the globe of my wife patiently waiting for me during an assignment.”

“I love it Darryl. I hope you have repeatedly thanked your wife for encouraging you to pursue your original aspirations to be a photographer. Look again at your photo: you are underwater swimming with fishes and a shark — which is so different from your other career as a firefighter/medic. And what I really love is how your photos reveal she also shares your new adventures as a photographer…” — @natgeoyourshot Producer David Y. Lee (@davidylee).

The Andes are pretty incredible. Taking off today and going all the way north to the other end of the country in Salta. Temperatures will be much warmer. I got a nasty cold here so I’m looking forward to warm weather and sun.

Hydra by night. A perfect long weekend getaway. In mid-September, the heat backs off and the water is still warm. A long trek or two gives good coverage of the island. Food is excellent, especially if fish and seafood are your thing and you don't mind feta, local cheeses, and Greek wine. Throw in an afternoon boat ride along the southwestern shore, a few dips in the Gulf of Hydra, some late afternoon strolls and a lie-in or two and you'll have the makings for a perfect shoulder/mid-season break.
