Time to seal-ebrate – it's the 26th anniversary of #MontereyBay National Marine Sanctuary! This sanctuary protects more than 6,000 square miles off the coast of California. It's home to more than 35 species of marine mammals – including elephant seals like these. What's your favorite thing about Monterey Bay?

Why should you reduce your use of plastic and always dispose of your trash properly? Well, for one thing, you'll be helping to protect marine animals like this leatherback sea turtle!
.
One of the major issues with plastic in the ocean is that it's easily mistaken for food by hungry animals. Leatherback turtles like this one in #MontereyBay National Marine Sanctuary, for example, primarily eat jellies. And a plastic bag floating on the ocean surface looks a lot like one of those jellies!
.
So always strive to reduce, reuse, recycle – and refuse! By reducing how much plastic we use, we help these sea creatures live long and healthy lives.

Haven’t posted in a week! Sorry, folks. Busy finishing up client projects. But here’s a decorator crab chilling out on top of a sea star! Nailed the focus on the eyes but botched the strobe placement 🤦‍♂️ #singlestrobeproblems #divecalifornia #montereybay

The surface was glass, except here with water boiling and alive with hundreds of common dolphins 🐬 🐬🐬 Sharing this because I'm still mesmerized and breathless reminiscing over this encounter .

There are few things more magical in this world than hundreds of dolphins racing through the wild Monterey Bay on a foggy fall morning.

For the last week, a superpod of common dolphins hundreds strong has been racing the Monterey Bay, hot on the tails of billions of baitfish. This video was filmed on Labor Day just off of Point Pinos in Pacific Grove, and is being played back at half speed. #montereybayaquarium #commondolphinsswimmingwithporpoise #dolphinatelyawesome #notjustaflukeintheprotectedmontereybay

This Pacific white-sided dolphin is nofin if not acrobatic! These agile dolphins undertake incredible maneuvers like this on porpoise. This gymnast of a dolphin was spotted in #MontereyBay National Marine Sanctuary.

Amazing day with many humpback whales in NOAA's Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary. #Humpback #Whale #MossLanding #MontereyBay
We had a great encounter with this energetic calf that we watched be very surface active for a long period of time. We also spent some time photo IDing other humpback whales. Photos taken during Monterey Bay Marine Life Studies research boat survey.

I thought long and hard about submitting this close-up to the Monterey Shootout Competition as one of my final submissions but ultimately decided against it.

It always blows my mind when an animal gets this close...because the interaction is entirely their choice and under their control. In the blink of an eye that Sea Lion could be 10ft away and there is no scenario where I could sneak up this close.

Anemonomnomnom! This white-spotted rose anemone in #MontereyBay National Marine Sanctuary is devouring an unlucky bat star. Sea anemones may appear to be flower-like blobs, but this diverse group of invertebrates has many feeding styles and are typically carnivorous! They can eat fish, jellyfish, crabs, sea stars, and even other anemones.

"Being able to give back to Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary as a docent at the Sanctuary Exploration Center has been a privilege and an honor. Being able to see this Serengeti of the Sea through the eyes of people from all over the globe is a thrill." – Sandy Cohen, #MontereyBay National Marine Sanctuary volunteer docent
