In 1854, Matthew Perry who was commodore of US navy came there Shimoda, to conclude the Convention of Kanagawa.
Japan was under national isolation then.
The convention made Japan as opened country and Shimoda port was opened for trade with overseas.
Nowadays, Shimoda port is not international trade port.
But the remains is still there as street name, "Perry Road".
Matthew Perry and his subordinates walked through the street when he conclude the convention.
