Brainstorming my next project, a collaboration with my grandma @haysheephzq “Four Treasures of the Study” (文房四宝). Which includes calligraphy brush, ink, paper and ink stone. Growing up in my grandma’s study, I have always been super attracted to her collectable articles of stationaries. Her stamps might have been in the family for over hundred years; her red ink paste box that’s all natural material from silk and natural mineral stones; her paper weight made from river stones, red wood, and crystals; and her ink slab that has been passed on from her father. It is in scholar’s culture to invest and pursue for special equipments for many reasons. For example the quality of ink slabs would affect the ink grind from it. The quality of brushes would affect one’s brushstrokes. And most importantly, the quality of those articles shows the owner’s taste.
I’m collaborating with my grandma to make a group of treasures in the study, which contains her paintings at the surface. I have recently received feedback that people think I describe too much of the process, and doesn’t share enough about my opinions. But I am more comfortable about leaving that to the audience to feel, and to have their very own understanding towards the work. Don’t let my thoughts get in the way 😛
