Photo by @nicholesobecki | Driving through a drought stricken area of western Somaliland in 2016 I came across a group of women washing their clothes in a roadside puddle -- the only water they could find. We spoke for a while of the challenges they faced, of the animals they’d lost in the drought, and the wells that had dried up. Somalia has long been a place of extremes, but climate and environmental changes are compounding those problems and leading to the end of a way of life. As they turned to walk home I took this image of one of the women in a field of cacti. The colors of her scarf melded into the vegetation and sky, and I was reminded of how intimate the ties are between people's lives and the land. I'm driven to share these stories of people struggling to cope with a dramatically altered environment in the hopes of raising an alarm. The extent of climate harm depends collectively on us. #climateforconflict #somalia #climatechange #environment

“I was working in New York Harbor and the fog was thick. I had my gear with me, so when we unexpectedly finished before lunch, I decided to try and get on a rooftop,” writes #YourShotPhotographer John Bacaring. “With my membership pass for The Top of the Rock (at 30 Rockefeller Plaza), I had unlimited access to the roof deck. I thought this could be epic! When I got to the roof, you could not see a single building. I waited for a few hours for the sunset, and it paid off! 100% no Photoshop.”

“This is a truly breathtaking surreal view of an iconic skyline. It feels like we’re floating in the clouds. Having that membership pass and the patience waiting for the sunset absolutely paid off. Beautiful work John!” — @natgeoyourshot Associate Photo Editor Kristen McNicholas (@kemcnicholas). This photo was selected for the September 21, 2018 edition of our Photos of the Week series.

Photo by @jessicasamplegram // Hanoi is a city full of balanced chaos like this photo of a delivery man carrying several large flower displays on his scooter. The streets of Hanoi are flooded with 5 million motorbikes carrying everything from live animals, wares to sell, and families five people deep. This all could soon change as the city is planning to ban the popular but polluting bikes by 2030 to help ease traffic congestion and air pollution. #hanoi #vietnam
