My grandfather turned 100 years old today. He was born in 1919. He grew up in upstate New York, hearing war stories from veterans of the Civil War. As a teenager he played jazz gigs in speakeasys. Later, he flew bombers over the Atlantic in WWII, and went on to become a flight instructor in the US Navy. He's been a teacher and was principal of several high schools, including a stint at a predominately black high school in Wilmington, DE where he turned the National Guard away from his school on the day Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated because, in his own words, he had his students' "trust and respect." Robert Martin is a remarkable man, and as of today, he's been around for a century.
