Shout Out to an awesome website and resource: Autismafter16.com. They are dedicated to "providing information and analysis of adult autism issues...their intention is to try to help adults with ASD and their families make sense of whatโ€™s out there...with a big focus on transition". Unfortunately, many young adults "fall of the cliff" after they leave high school, meaning they lose their connection to services and supports and families begin to flounder. Thank you Autismafter16 for helping our community ๐Ÿ’™

Here is a great tip that I found online, courtesy of Wrightslaw.com. Create an information folder about your child for their new teacher, including: ~a list of at least 3 important things about your child ~a recent picture ~a list strategies that seem to work well

This will make those first weeks of school so much easier for your child and their teacher ๐Ÿ˜‰๐Ÿ’™

Happy Sunday Funday Families!! Here is a picture of sister love ๐Ÿ’™ *
*
You wouldn't know that this was a tough week. With the girls home together this summer, I think Grace was experiencing "little sister overload". She scratched her sister several times, which is rare for her but not unexpected for kiddos with Autism. *

Today, all is well. How are things for you this Sunday...?? ๐Ÿ’™

Happy Wondering Wednesday!!
Wondering how to prepare your child for the return to school? I will be sharing tips here each week.
1. If you have been following a later summer bedtime, try to start at least one week ahead of time to gradually shift to an earlier bedtime.
2. Take a trip to your child's school. You could drive around the school and talk about school starting soon or maybe walk around the neighborhood. This may help to ease anxieties.

Let's keep wondering families...๐Ÿ’™

This quote is so meaningful...As we begin another school year, let's encourage our children to reach for the stars as they become the best "them" they can be.

"And then there is always that realistic fear if you do have another child, will they be on the spectrum as well. Don't get me wrong, a child is a blessing. But I only know one perspective, and I can't down play how hard raising Noah is."

This month we will discuss back to school tips for special needs families. Are you concerned that your child may have regressed in some skills this summer? As we prepare for school, know that your child has been learning all summer. Through the family adventures, therapy appointments and snuggle sessions...they are always learning. Maybe life lessons that are just as important as academics ๐Ÿ’™

Does your kiddo have a love/hate relationship with hand dryers? Join the club ๐Ÿ˜‰ My daughter doesn't like the loud sound of dryers and is often anxious when we visit public restrooms. However, she is also fascinated by them and likes to check each one to test their sound. Fyi, Target wins so far for having the loudest dryers, lol ๐Ÿ’™

Happy Sunday Parents!!
When is the last time that you spent quality time alone? I mean totally apart from your special needs kiddos? This may sound scary or impossible, but it is so important for single as well as two parent families. Time alone allows you to refresh and reconnect with yourself and/or your mate.
*
*
This year, we finally activated our respite care hours, a service through the Regional Center. We are very happy now for the opportunity to share regular "date nights". Thankfully they offer discounted care for our other daughter as well as our daughter with Autism. The girls have a blast! They really love their sitters as we have found several who are perfect matches for our family. *
*
Parents, l highly encourage you to engage in self care in whatever way works best for your family ๐Ÿ’™

๐Ÿ‹ Summer Lemonade Update ๐Ÿ‹
Our family has taken on the idea of making as many lemonade flavors as possible this summer, using lemons from our garden (see previous July posts for other flavors). *
*
*
Recently, we made one of our new favorites pictured here, mango lemonade ๐Ÿ˜‰. We also enjoyed the plum lemonade pictured here. A few more flavors to go...we'll keep you posted. Have you tried cooking with your special needs kiddo? Let's hear about it...๐Ÿ’™

Hello Parents๐Ÿ’™
So we're practicing reading as one of our summer activities...
*
*
Recently at Barnes and Noble, I had an "aha" moment. It is time for my daughter to move to chapter books. This is much more appropriate for 2nd grade in comparison to her favorite Dr. Seuss books. However, getting her to read for pleasure is a struggle. She also needs support to understand grade level concepts when reading. Pretty typical for kiddos with Autism. *
*
So, this is as close as I decided to get for the moment. At least not another Dr. Seuss book, hopefully expanding her interests ๐Ÿ˜‰ Are you tackling reading this summer? What books do your kiddos like?

5

Happy Wondering Wednesday Families!!
Still enjoying summer vacation with your special needs kiddos? If you're like me, we have about four more weeks to go ๐ŸŒž

If you are wondering how to continue to keep the summer fun, here are a few ideas that I found through friendshipcircle.org and my own experiences: ๐Ÿ’™ Have a theme for each day, such as Safety Sunday and Time to Read Tuesday ๐Ÿ’™ Practice key skills that may need extra attention, such as learning their phone number, how to make a sandwich, or shoe tying
๐Ÿ’™ Try gardening. Plant seeds to create starter plants that you can grow for the fall. We'll be trying carrots ๐Ÿฅ•

Hope this was helpful! Let's keep wondering families ๐Ÿ’™

Fun Fact Friday!!
July 20th is Space Exploration Day ๐Ÿš€๐Ÿ›ฐ๏ธ
This annual holiday commemorates the first manned mission to the Moon. On July 20, 1969, astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin became the first humans to step foot on the surface of the Moon. In 1984, the day was proclaimed a holiday in the U.S.

Anyone parenting a future astronaut? Many of our special needs kiddos have an interest in space. Since around age two, our daughter has shown an interest for learning about the solar system and says that she wants to be an astronaut. Time will tell where this leads. Hello special needs families...๐Ÿ’™
This month our topic is tips for enjoying summer fun โ˜€๏ธ We recently took an evening trip to the zoo and had a great time! Here is what helped...
*
*
~Adding the event to our weekly schedule so everyone knew about it ~Reviewing pictures of a previous visit to remind my daughter of the fun she previously had ~Planning a short visit. We only planned to do one main activity at the zoo. Anything more was based on gauging everyone's interest, energy, etc.
Hope these tips are helpful...Let's keep wondering families!
