When I was younger I couldn’t wait for the Fourth of July. I love fireworks and I loved this country. Even into my early adulthood I would go to 4th of July parties, don my red white and blue, wave a flag. I even have blog posts where I put together looks for this day. One day, I decided to actually THINK about the 4th of July and what it stood for, instead of blindly celebrating a holiday. The 4th of July aka Independence Day is the day this country allegedly adopted the Declaration of Independence. I say allegedly bc there’s some dispute to the actual dates. Regardless this “holiday” celebrates freedom, but I keep thinking about my ancestors that were NOT free when the declaration was written. The hypocrisy to declare independence and freedom from a tyrant king while keeping slaves was just too much, and I stopped celebrating this holiday.
Now with recent events: the continued poor treatment of minorities in this country, the crime of existing while black, police murdering ppl that look like me, nasty propaganda against immigrants, separating migrant children from their parents, forgetting about human rights, I REALLY can’t do this holiday. I’m not proud to be an American at this point...and I refuse to be a hypocrite, like our founding fathers, out here celebrating a country that forgot how to treat people. #4thofjuly #independenceday
