โ€œAnd Iโ€™m proud to be an American, where at least I know Iโ€™m freeโ€.โšซ๏ธ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธโšซ๏ธ
Truth is, we arenโ€™t free. You arenโ€™t free. Iโ€™m not free. None of us are free. We are chained. We live on stolen land as immigrants, while telling those wanting to visit, โ€œyou donโ€™t belong hereโ€. Iโ€™m twice as more likely to be murdered than others who look just like me but their sexuality is different and Iโ€™m 4 times more likely to be murdered because Iโ€™m trans. Employment, housing, healthcare and other basic necessities all have barriers that make us as a LGBTQ community, more vulnerable. We have a President who is destroying our Country and the majority of โ€œWe the Peopleโ€ didnโ€™t vote for him. Here in America, they have lied to us since birth. I came up with this crazy idea to wear black today, and in the end, I donโ€™t think I am so crazy for doing so.โœŠ๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ Happy 4th to you sexy humans, spread love and watch your back out there tonight๐Ÿค˜๐Ÿพ๐Ÿป|| #FreedomFighter #4thOfJulyBlackout

When I was younger I couldnโ€™t wait for the Fourth of July. I love fireworks and I loved this country. Even into my early adulthood I would go to 4th of July parties, don my red white and blue, wave a flag. I even have blog posts where I put together looks for this day. One day, I decided to actually THINK about the 4th of July and what it stood for, instead of blindly celebrating a holiday. The 4th of July aka Independence Day is the day this country allegedly adopted the Declaration of Independence. I say allegedly bc thereโ€™s some dispute to the actual dates. Regardless this โ€œholidayโ€ celebrates freedom, but I keep thinking about my ancestors that were NOT free when the declaration was written. The hypocrisy to declare independence and freedom from a tyrant king while keeping slaves was just too much, and I stopped celebrating this holiday.

Now with recent events: the continued poor treatment of minorities in this country, the crime of existing while black, police murdering ppl that look like me, nasty propaganda against immigrants, separating migrant children from their parents, forgetting about human rights, I REALLY canโ€™t do this holiday. Iโ€™m not proud to be an American at this point...and I refuse to be a hypocrite, like our founding fathers, out here celebrating a country that forgot how to treat people. #4thofjuly #independenceday

Are you fed up with Human rights being thrown by the wayside? Scared for the direction in which this country is headed? If you answered yes to any of the above you may be struggling to feel patriotic...struggling to feel โ€œproud to be an American....conflicted with celebrating the 4th of July. If youโ€™re like me than join the #4thofjulyblackout movement. Turn your social media profile pics black on July 4th to show the country and the world that you are NOT ok with the actions being done by our country.

My dad used to say: if it's not fun for all, it's not fun at all. That's what #BlackLivesMatter and #4thofJulyBlackout is all about. If not all in this country are free, then it's not a free country at all. Let's keep in mind that the people who declared America's independence and wrote the constitution held captive enslaved people and denied them their freedom. Or, that Legal White supremacy did not end in 1965. The principles we consider "American" like liberty and justice must also be practiced, otherwise they're just words.

I refuse to celebrate Independence Day in a country where my life is disposable. #4thofJulyBlackout #blacklivesmatter.

Spending the day in Mexico where the fourth isn't important. Dressed in all black, for the blackout of awareness on the massacre of black lives in America. Went with my fearless Pulp Fiction shirt, cause in the face of ignorance, stay fearless! Happy Fake Independence Day, where not everyone is free !๐Ÿ’ญ๐Ÿ’ญ #blackout#4thofjulyblackout#landoftheslaveshomeofthebrainwashed#blacklivesmatter#foodforthought

#4thofJulyBlackout Racism isn't over. White supremacy isn't over. This country was built on genocide and slavery, not liberty and justice. We have a long way to go until we will have liberty and justice for all so we can't stop fighting. On #4thofJulyBlackout i ask myself and my fellow white people to recognize our privilege and learning how to lift up the voices and movements of POC. Reverse racism doesn't exist. White privilege does. Take a stand and be accountable to yourself, your privileges and demand change from this country.

I'm wearing all black today on a day that many typically wear the colors of our nation red, white, and blue because the sad truth is that if you're not a white, heterosexual, upper middle class or higher male, you're treated as a second-rate citizen in this land of "freedom". I can't possibly support a country that uses minorities and their resources to build their "great" nation and then turns around and dehumanizes and suffocates their freedoms. Until "with liberty and justice for all" actually means something, I will continue to keep talking about this country's problematic actions. Happy Imperialism Day, ya'll! ๐Ÿ˜’โœŠ๐Ÿพ โœŠ๐ŸฝโœŠ๐Ÿผ#blacklivesmatter #4thofjulyblackout #notmyindependenceday

"Liberty and justice for all" means that no one gets to live in a bubble and that everyone is afforded the same opportunity to live the American dream.
I wouldn't choose to live anywhere else. I love my country and I'm proud to be an American. But I can't pretend we don't have stuff to unpack. The first step is listening to stories of people who live in a different America and believing them. The next step is talking about it with each other.

Whose independence? #4thofjulyblackout #blacklivesmatter

When America was founded on July 4th, 1776, it was at the expense of people of color. Our country's early success required genocide of Native Americans and mass enslavement of Africans. To this day, people of color are not offered liberty and justice the way that white Americans are. So who's independence are you celebrating? Please, take some time to think about it. And think about what you can do to support racial justice in America. The first step is talking about it. #4thofJulyBlackout #BlackLivesMatter #LibertyandJusticeforALL

All the way here in #nz I want to support the #4thofjulyblackout because I believe in #libertyandjusticeforall #blacklivesmatter #speakout #standup #equality #love #antiracism #rip. Rest In peace to anyone who is a victim to hate crimes. In my eyes everyone should be equal regardless of skin tone, religion or sexuality.

Today we celebrate our country but we also must stand in solidarity with our brothers and sisters who face systematic racism and discrimination. Do we truly have "liberty and justice for all"? Join me in wearing black alongside the traditional colors for #4thofjulyblackout

Today is a day to honor our freedoms and rights as Americans, yet injustice persists throughout our nation that makes it difficult for many to celebrate. Americans continue to be treated unequally in the law and in society because of something as inconsequential and personal as their gender, orientation, religion (or lack thereof), socioeconomic status, and especially their race. Today I have decided that, while I will partake in my local celebrations, I will do so with the critical reminder that many Americans are still not free. I choose to wear all black instead of our national colors to draw attention to the racial injustices against black Americans that still enslave so many people across the United States. I am proud of many things in this country, but we still have a long way to go to achieve what we set out to do over 200 years ago - #LibertyAndJusticeForAll #4thOfJulyBlackout

OK guys don't forget that tomorrow (4th of July) there are plans to do an independence day black out. Wear a black t shirt to show support for the black community and their struggle (which I might add, is also our struggle if we believe in equality). The lgbtqia community just got a huge win. Let's help change society for the better!
