Yep, this'll be me today! For a lot of us that aren't super bendy, more flexibility will come once the body knows that the movements don't need to be protected. What does that mean?!
It means putting your body in positions you don't normally do will be high maintenance..lol if you want to gain more flexibility, work at it often, so your brain recognizes the new pattern, and allows the additional range of motion! (Granted that you're anatomically built to have the additional range)
