Toledo native Roger Bresnahan made his mark on baseball as a successful catcher for several Major League teams including the Baltimore Orioles, the New York Giants, the St. Louis Cardinals and the Chicago Cubs. Born in 1879 to Irish immigrant parents, Roger developed his skill playing baseball in the sandlots and school fields around Toledo.
In addition to being a talented baseball player, Bresnahan was also an innovator. He was the first catcher in the MLB to wear shin guards. Initially heckled for his homemade invention, the MLB soon adopted his idea and shin guards are now the standard.
Learn more about Bresnahan and the history of Ohio sports in March at the Ohio History Center as we debut our newest exhibit! Get details at ohiohistory.org/sports.
