#FlovemberChallenge day 2: Rewind
In her haste to not get any late fees, Sloane forgets to rewind her favorite movie, You've Got Mail, before she slips it down the return shaft at Blockbusters. She loves that movie - knows every line and beat. It's not for your typical reasons. Not because Meg Ryan is at her rom-com best or the thought that this playing out in real life is a bit of the ridiculous side. Not even for Dave Chappelle who, as meme culture proves, does indeed appear in this movie. She rents it all the time because it reminds her of what used to be. The things that used to be easy.
You've Got Mail was her first DVD after begging her mom for weeks back in 1999. She was 11. It reminds her of the silent moments before the screaming, before the tears, before the muddled "I'm sorrys". It became a soundtrack of what was remembered as solace. As an adult, she puts it on during marathon writing spells and after a lover again breaks her heart. It was - is - her security blanket.
It's 2014. There are only shells remaining of her home away from it all. The movies serve as lost family members who also understand the feelings after their dad leaves and their mom shrinks. Here she feels protected.
She drops her head against the glass, allowing the tears to well but not pass down her cheek. "I will be back", she whispers. "I promise."
