We had passed this gigantic statue of a warrior a couple of times while on our way to participating in some adventure sports and when we were visiting more popular tourist attractions like the Secret Buddha garden and the Na Muang waterfall. So one day while we were just exploring the island, we decided to check the place out.
We discovered that this is a shrine dedicated to a legendary Chinese warrior called Guan Yu who died almost 2000 years ago. A local entrepreneur built this shrine to commemorate the warrior and to honour the local Chinese community. The statue is 16 metres high not counting the base it sits on. There is a temple behind the statue and restaurants and gift shops on the ground level.
