The Dog Lovers Show - introducing another gentle giant, the Leonberger. Can you imagine that this youngster is actually only a pup! Whilst I was sitting behind her admiring her beautiful, beautiful coat - she decided my lap made a nice seat!
So, here are some Leonberger facts... - They originate from Leonberg in Baden-Württemberg, Germany. - They were bred to symbolize a 'lion dog' - like the lion in the town crest. - They are used as search and rescue dogs and like the Newfie, excel in an aquatic environment. - Females reach up to 52kg and the males can weight in at almost 70kg! Makes my 34kg greyhound pale in comparison... - Relevant to physiotherapists, Leonbergers are susceptible to a neurological condition known as inherited Leonberger paralysis/polyneuropathy, to which here is a genetic component. A good breeder will be aware of this and take this into account to minimise breeding this trait in future dogs. - Like other giant breeds hip dysplasia and osteochondrosis dissecans are conditions that the Leonberger may encounter. Fortunately, there is a lot that your physiotherapist can do to help successfully manage these conditions for optimal quality of life. - Temperament = awesome! As you can see from this friendly giant sitting on my lap :) Any Leonberger experts out there? Feel free to share more facts with me here!
