Formed in 2003 stemming from the deep south Austin Texas came heavy metal -stoner rock band known as The Sword.
Greatly influenced from the infamous Black Sabbath & Sleep, this four piece has reached heights of headlining personal tours as well as accompanying fellow names such as Clutch, Lamb Of God, & Metallica.
Over the years the group's sound & playing style both have altered almost drastically, leaving a handful of fans dissapointed in the sudden twist of composition & overall sound.. Non the less, there is the other handful who've embraced & accepted they've "burnt out" their old work on tour & likely made a genuine decision to play based off what they truly enjoy playing, simply put.
Starting with the heavy side of the blade we'll find Age Of Winters & Gods Of The Earth, both consisting of doomy elements & groove - driven riffs. Following more recent releases comes Warp Riders & Apocryphon with the beginings of a change in playing style carrying new trippy stoner-like augmentations. Present day Sword now tours with setlists compiled of new albums High Country & the acoustic twin album Low Country.
These guys are a personal favorite of mine & hold some of the very first riffs I've learned to play on guitar over the years. They have it all, whether your looking for something heavy & sped up to blow through work/class, slowed down with a groove for casual listening, or even a psychedelic trippy effect to endulge in a day off with a fatty in hand; This band is absolutely an ideal starting point for any open minded listeners interested in the genre. It goes without saying The Sword has a special place on my top note worthy band list.
