Just like any CEO position, this title requires years of experience and many uncomfortable situations in which to learn from and grow. It’s not all fun and games (insert montage of me jumping out of a plane, climbing a glacier, bungee jumping shouting YOLO) it can also be hard work and sometimes scary (insert montage of me carrying a laptop, camera, tripod alone by myself in the dark alley somewhere in Russia after missing my train and trying to find a hostel with no cell phone or internet). Just like any job (especially a dream job that thousands of people want)- it requires honing your skills, practice, failure, trial and error. In 2009 I applied for Tourism Queensland’s “Best Job in the World” along with 35,000 other applicants (I’ll post the video later today so you can really get a laugh)- of course I didn’t get the job, but I was only 23 years old – sure I travelled to over 20 countries by myself that year but these types of jobs require much more than a colorful passport. I didn’t have the skill set for a job with that heavy of a title, and that’s okay. We fail, we practice, we learn, fail some more, we grow – universal formula of life. Then again, in 2013, I applied to Jauntaroo’s Chief World Explorer and made it as a top 10 finalist (and I had the most votes THANKS TO ALL OF YOU). Four years later here we are again. This time running for CEO (I can’t get enough of this title) “Cancun Experience Officer” for @cancun.com – I was skipping for a week straight when I found out I made it to the top 120 and cried tears of joy when the results for the top 50 finalists came in. I honestly think my body will grow a pair of wings and I will start flying if I make it any further- I am already so happy I feel like I am floating.
I know I can do this job. I don’t know if I’ve ever been this confident about anything in my life AND THAT IS THE PART THAT FEELS SO FREAKING GOOD.
So here’s the cheese folks (we knew this was coming)- keep doing what you love, no matter how insane or ridiculous the odds may be that you will succeed, because the natural high that comes from BELIEVING IN YOURSELF, that’s the life juice right there, GET ADDICTED TO IT.
