With Thanksgiving this week, I can’t help but reflect on this holiday. Spending time with family I don’t see often is my favorite part. I’m grateful to have an eclectic, supportive, loving family in which everyone is wonderful in their own way. My family is also A LOT of fun and most of Thanksgiving Day is ripe with laughter, teasing and making fun of each other in a loving way.
The part that was always hardest was when we all sat down to eat. With 15 people sitting around a big table, conversation can get difficult to follow especially when you have a family so good at banter and humor! Sometimes my sister, mother or father would lean over and reiterate the joke or topic at the moment to keep me in the loop which is quite amazing of them. But you know, sometimes a joke isn’t so funny when it is told second time around or by repeating.
Some years this would bother me, some not so much. Sometimes I get tired of pretending I understand by smiling or laughing along even though I have no idea what is going on. Sometimes I would get frustrated and/or upset with missing out. Sometimes it just makes me happy to look around and see the people I love laughing and having fun.
It ain’t all bad at all though. Fortunately, I have WAY less distraction during dinner time banter which means I can just focus hard on inhaling the legendary plate of food in front of me!
