Ringed Kingfisher: A large and noisy kingfisher that is commonly found along larger rivers of Central and South America. With the different kingfisher species in the area, size of the bird actually correlates with the size of stream/pool they prefer to live at! The smaller the species the more time they spend in denser vegetation at smaller water bodies and the larger the species the more likely it is encountered around larger rivers, ponds and lakes. This minimizes competition and allows multiple very similar species of kingfishers to live in the same forest together.

Itโ€™s World Lion Day. I am proud to be an ambassador for the Kevin Richardson Foundation. Kevin - @lionwhisperersa - does a fantastic job raising awareness of the plight of this alpha predator. Few people on the planet know more about lions than Kevin.
.
No animal is under greater pressure from encroachment in Africa and Kevin believes there are less than 15,000 lions left in Africa. Thatโ€™s a calamitous fall of over 90% in the last 100 years.
.
This image - The Lion King - was taken with remotes in Kevinโ€™s sanctuary. It is a reminder of what our grandchildren could miss out on. We should all do our bit in anyway we can.

No matter where on Earth you call home, forests make your life possible. They are so many things โ€“ our respite, our natural air filters, our water factories, our medicine cabinets. We literally canโ€™t live without them. And at @ConservationOrg we work to ensure the worldโ€™s most important forests are protected for future generations.

Majestic Hunter! Ultimate Feline! King Of The Jungle! #WorldLionDay is celebrated to raise awareness and pay tribute to the beast. This day was found by Big Cat Rescue, which is the world's largest accredited sanctuary dedicated to the big cats. Staring straight into the amber eyes of a lion will always awaken a part of me that knows instinctively that I'm not the true predator here and yet people's amazing abilities with tools and intelligence has made our species stronger by far and we're not out-competing every other creator on the planet. Lions are the iconic, strong, proud and symbols of power all over the world, but there are more statues of lions in the world, rather than real lions. About 20,000 remaining, scattered in ever small patches of wilderness. It's worth noting that this #WorldLionDay but also noting that we've the ability to halt and reverse it, when we put our mind to it.

Happy ๐Ÿฆ๐Ÿ’•#WorldLionDay! #081018
Just in case you havenโ€™t heard, friends, our most iconic of all sentient beings are drastically decreasing in numbers due to irresponsible human contact and impact of their natural habitat, canned hunting and poaching. Approximately 20,000 lions left in the wild. Please, let that number sink in for just a second. ONLY 20,000 LIONS LEFT. Not just today for World Lion Day, but every single day from this day forward, show them compassion and love, share the knowledge with your friends and family beginning by spreading the awareness necessary with our next generation, our next leaders and inhabitants of the world, our children. Show them by example . This is key. We really must behave and act consciously towards living things, now, if we want our kids to do the same, or we risk all life preservation, be it on land, sea, or air. Say NO to irresponsible tourism and travel. SAY YES TO PRESERVING ALL LIFE, IN ALL WAYS, ALWAYS.

It's worth noting this decline this #WorldLionDay but also noting that we have the ability to halt and reverse it when we put our minds to it. Nine years ago, together with @dereckjoubert, and National Geographic, we set up the Big Cats Initiative as a long-term effort to halt the declineof big cats in the wild. The initiative supports efforts to save big cats through assessment, on-the-ground conservation, education, and global public-awareness campaigns. To date, this has supported more than 110 innovative projects in 28 countries that are helping big cats and communities thrive - all working to keep these wild eyes alight across Africa, ready to pierce our souls with the truth about who we really are. It is impossible to recognize World Lion Day without mentioning the greatest big cat documentary filmmakers and photographers in the world. The way they have filmed and portrayed lions and other animals throughout their careers has always been decades ahead of everybody else.

Happy World Lion Day! This stunning lady was able to take down a full grown male Kudu all on her own. In my foolishness, I let my foot dangle outside of the jeep. When she spotted it and moved in my direction, I quickly pulled it back in. She flopped to the ground within 3 feet of me, all the while maintaining eye contact. In an instant I was humbled. Lions help keep the wild spaces of Africa healthy. A world without lions in the wild is a disturbing possibility if we as humans don't do our best to respect and protect them. #worldlionday #bigcatinitiative #causeanuproar #protectlions #savewildlife #savehabitat #conservation #greatplainsconservation #selindaexplorers #botswana #ilovebotswana #wildlifephotography #femalephotographer #nofilter

Happy #worldlionday! More than a century ago, there were 200,000 lions thriving in Africa. Now their population dwindles at just 20,000, and in 26 African countries their species has become extinct. Their biggest predator are humans, and their population has been steadily declining due to trophy hunting, habitat loss, and bushmeat poaching. #savethelions #causeanuproar #travelsouthafrica #wildlifephotography #sabisabireserve

Repost @natgeo Photo by @beverlyjoubert. Staring straight into the amber eyes of a lioness will always awaken a part of me that knows instinctively that I am not the true predator here. And yet - people's amazing ability with tools and intelligence has made our species stronger by far and we are outcompeting every other predator on the planet. Lions are iconic - strong and proud and symbols of power throughout the world. But there are now more statues of lions in the world than there are real lions. Only around 20 000 remain, scattered in ever-smaller patches of wilderness. It's worth noting this decline this #WorldLionDay but also noting that we have the ability to halt and reverse it when we put our minds to it.
