What brought you to Toastmasters?
My job does not require very much public speaking right now, but if I want to progress it will be something I will need to be proficient in, so I wanted to be prepared. I started Toastmasters because I knew it was a supportive and encouraging environment.
What are some topics that you have spoken about at the club?
I have spoken about a wide variety of topics, everything from a book review, to time management, to inclusionary zoning (something for work), to what I have learned about the homeless issue. The pathways program for Toastmasters does a good job of balancing having a direction to the speeches, and also allowing the presenter to speak on topics that interest them.
Biggest thing you have learned so far?
The biggest thing I have learned so far is that getting comfortable speaking in front of others is all about practice. The nervousness of getting on stage will probably never go away, but managing that nervousness gets much easier with practice. It's just like any other skill, you have to practice, practice, practice to make any progress.
