Going back home has had a new special meaning to me ever since I read "Black Privilege: Opportunity Comes To Those Who Create It" by #charlamagnethagod ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
In the book, one of the things he talks about is going back home to his small hometown in Moncks Corner, SC just to refocus and reset. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I loved the idea of going back where you came from to focus, recenter and think about your next move. When I went home recently I stood in front of my old school, C.S. 200, and I could see me running on the concrete play area (we ain't have no play ground...lol) and loving life.
I looked across the street and looked at my old window in the Dunbar Apartments and can remember me gazing into the sky at night, watching lights in the other apartment buildings go out one by one and listening to the police sirens and fire trucks. Life was so simple then and all I knew was that I wanted to be great!
It was many years later that I realized that the Dunbar Apartments I lived in for years was actually named after Paul Lawrence Dunbar, a famous poet, writer and author. Can you believe that I turned out to also be a poet, writer and author? What a coincidence!
My desire to be great at what I do has not dissipated and my passion for writing increases daily. As I make my next moves I'm invigorated by the thought of continuous learning, executing my message thoroughly, excelling in my craft and possibly changing someone's life though my stories or even by helping them write their own. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
In a nutshell...writing is definitely BAE.
