it wouldn’t be New York without cannoli from Little Italy. Only one bakery in Edinburgh creates cannoli, so I was in my element to find streets and streets of vendors offering up variants of these heavenly morsels.
Here, traditionally with creamy ricotta and chocolate filling within a fried crumbly crust -the Marsala wine in the dough gives the blistered texture. No longer a treat restricted to Carnevale (similar to Mardi Gras, Shrove Tuesday) cannoli are enjoyed year round and eaten the right way with your fingers, biting alternate ends leaving the middle ‘til last.
Cannoli are (plainly) phallic and are a pastry based icon of fertility, symbolising the orgiastic rites of the eater. Divine and delicious, my kind of snack
