Hello Phillies Nation! With my first post, I wanted to analyze our current lineup and see what kind of improvements could be made in the coming weeks. Everyone knows about the Harper and Machado buzz, but I’ve got some decent alternatives.
Phils have positioned themselves for a playoff push with the acquisitions of Jean Segura , Andrew McCutchen, and David Robertson. Ownership and upper management has stated that they will spend “stupid money” this offseason, but we haven’t quite seen that yet. A splash for Machado or Harper would certainly solidify that statement, but the Phils could go a number of different directions. Bob Nightengale of USA Today recently reported that the Phillies “have visions” of signing Harper Keuchel, and Craig Kimbrel. I just don’t view this as realistic since a package of those 3 players would command $400 million plus. Keuchel is looking for a long term deal but he won’t get more than 5 years. Kimbrel has stars that he wants north of $100 million, but with Adam Ottavino going to the Yanks now, the market for relievers is paper thin. The Phils could hypothetically sign Keuchel and Kimbrel to cheaper deals than what was expected, but I really don’t see that happening. As for Harper and Machado, it seems as though the Phils have favored Machado over Harper until Bryce’s meeting with Phillies brass last Saturday. It will be interesting to see how this plays out, and if the Phils are unable to sign either, they have healthy alternatives. Mike Moustakas would certainly be a great fit. He’s someone that you could plug in to the middle of your lineup and he will produce. If we miss out on Harper, AJ Pollock is an option. He’s a major gamble but he’s a decent center fielder. It will be interesting to see how these next couple of weeks, and we’ll have to wait and see who goes where. As for Middleton, Klentak, and MacPhail, the ball is in your court fellas.
