#TheMachine has been on my list for a long time & tonight was the night! I don’t remember what I thought it would be, but this #film didn’t go the way I thought it was going to, but that’s okay!
It’s basically a two-hander. #TobyStephens is a scientist using military funds to develop AI. His reasons are twofold. He wants to help injured soldiers get back some of what they lost, but really he wants to use the discovery to save his dying child.
Enter #CaityLotz’s Ava, who’s managed to make an advance in machine intelligence all on her own. She’s brought in to help Toby’s Vincent.
At first, things go well. The two get on quite well. He’s hiding the secret of his daughter, but he’s not the only one with secrets. Overseer Thomson, played by #DenisLawson, wants quicker results.
Tragedy strikes when a Chinese spy infiltrates the base & kills Ava. But her part of the project was to provide the brain pattern to base AI on, so her mind was mostly mapped to begin with. From there it was just a matter of putting that pattern into a mechanized body, this creating the titular Machine.
When the daughter takes a turn for the worse, Vincent is forced to spend time away from the base & Thomson steps in, accelerating the Machine’s development toward weapon & away from its current childlike existence.
In the end, it becomes a battle over the “soul” of the machine. Will Vincent capitulate to save his daughter? Will Ava turn into a killing machine? Gotta watch & find out.
Full disclosure, I’ve hoisted a few beers with Toby back in the #BlackSails days & I like him as a person. It’s not the flashy role of this #movie, but he’s very good in it.
@caitylotz is phenomenal! She has to play two versions of her character: the human & the machine. She succeeds! How she talks is different for each & so is how she moves. It’s subtle, but it’s there.
In the end, there’s a Don’t Play God vibe, but at the same time, the characters themselves have little regret to opening this Pandora’s Box.
You can compare this to #ExMachina, but they’re each their own thing. It’s more like a good double feature pairing.
Glad I saw it. You should too. #screeningoftheday #movies #films #SciFi
