First-borns are the living embodiment of new frontiers. Every new phase, fever, television show, and piece of homework—it’s all new terrority to the first-time parent. Exhilirating and nerve-wracking, it’s hard to know if you’re doing the right thing with your child’s tender soul. But you aren’t the only one navigating these unchartered waters. Your child, is too! And you’re exploring, learning, together.
The most important thing Juan José and I are learning together is how to separate our achievements from our self-worth, grounding our identities in God’s love instead. For him, I tell him how much I love him, how much God loves him, no matter what he does, no matter what he says. Whether he’s kind or mean to his friends, whether he runs fast or slow, I will always love him. God will always love him. And for me, I tell myself all of that, too, with something extra added in: no matter how hard I try to be a great mom for my children, God’s love for me and for them will fill in my gaps. I can trust God with my parenting, with my family, with *all of it*.
