Photo by @CarltonWard | An ambitious red-shouldered hawk has caught a sizable dinner—likely a Florida water snake. I witnessed this moment at Buck Island Ranch, part of Archbold Biological Station, which directs research in order to better understand the intricacies of wildlife, water, cattle grazing, and carbon sequestration in the rangelands of the Northern Everglades. These lands are crucial to the Florida Wildlife Corridor and wide-ranging species such as the Florida panther. Shot during my #PathofthePanther storytelling project with @insidenatgeo. The starfish is on the move in the touch tank. I used to think they moved extremely slow but was proved otherwise by watching the critters in touch tanks. They feel really cool on your hands. I hope you all have an amazing night!

I used to love shooting with black and white 35mm film because of the rich tones, which this (digital) photo reminds me of. The craftsmanship involved with developing film and making prints by hand, in the darkroom, was truly appealing to me. I even had a darkroom in my basement at one time! It was fun, and maybe I’ll go back to it one day. Anyway, this expired #cormorant was beautiful to me as I passed it on the beach yesterday. Maybe some will find this dead creature morbid, but I rather enjoy these reminders that death is simply part of the cycle and the chance to appreciate a beautiful animal at a closer distance than usual.

Reposted from @natgeo - Photo by @CarltonWard | The corner of the northern Gulf of Mexico where Hurricane Michael made landfall is known as the Forgotten Coast. My prayers are with the people, many of whom lost their homes and businesses to tornado strength winds and tremendous storm surge. I’m thinking about towns like Apalachicola, where 80 percent of households depend upon Gulf fisheries for their livelihoods, and remembering my time there during the last Florida Wildlife Corridor Expedition. In this photo, third generation Apalachicola Kendall oysterman Schoelles tongs for oysters in St Vincent Sound where one million acres of contiguous protected land extend north from the coast, providing crucial wildlife habitat while helping ensure the health of the estuary downstream. Oysters filter the bay to clean the water. In that way, Kendall and oyster men and women like him are protecting the Gulf for all of us, especially as they plant new oyster beds that also help buffer the coast against storms. I trust Kendall has weathered this hurricane. He and his family have weathered storms on the Gulf for more than a century. Hopefully he will be tonging for oysters and caring for the bay again soon. Maybe there will be a silver lining and the hurricane will have dissipated the red tide that has been plaguing the Gulf this summer, arguably exacerbated by pollution from millions of coastal residence who don't live in balance with the ecosystem the way Kendall does. But the Gulf is resilient and balance and sustainability are possible if we all pay attention and do our part. Long live the Forgotten Coast. #GulfofMexico #ForgottenCoast #FloridaWild @FL_WildCorridor @Nature_org #KeepFLWild @SeaLegacy #TurntheTide @natgeoimagecollection

Here’s a wet season shot from one of my favorite camera trap spots in the Florida Everglades. My goal was to get a panther jumping over the water. But this bobcat walking down the log was a beautiful consolation. I love seeing all of the different species of wildlife that rely on the #PathofthePanther. The goal is to use the story of the endangered Florida panther to inspire the land conservation needed to save the Florida Wildlife Corridor or and keep the Everglades from being cut off by development from the rest of America. @fl_wildcorridor @natgeo @insidenatgeo @nature_org @ilcp_photographers #floridawild #keepflwild

|Double Crested Cormorant| Following up on this cool bird I posted about yesterday. While they don’t have colorful feathers, cormorants could make the case for the most striking eyes in the aviary world. Functionally, their eye’s are adapted to hunt underwater. They have an internally flat cornea that’s thick while still flexible, similar to a penguins. This helps focus when light is bent underwater. Cormorants also have well-developed muscles that regulate pupil size and shape making their vision comparable to other marine animals.
