EDIT: Cole Sulser is the PTBNL
Trade Details above-
The loss: The only real loss of the trade is Carlos Santana, which was an expected move every since Dipoto acquired him in the Segura trade. His on the field value is basically the same as Edwin who we are getting in exchange, although he most likely will be gone soon. We also added in 6 million to head to CLE, but that money will be made up by the extra payroll space available next offseason from Edwin’s contract, which has only 1 guaranteed year as opposed to Santana’s 2.
The return: At first it may seem the main addition from this trade is Edwin Encarnacion, but I would disagree with that. Along with him, we are also receiving a Competitive balance round B pick, which is the 77th overall in the upcoming 2019 draft. So, along with adding Edwin, who is as close to an equal replacement for Santana as you can get, we will also add a probable top 15 prospect for our farm system. We are also receiving an extra 5 million from the Rays to offset some to the 6.
Overall Grade: This trade is basically buying a draft pick, with out losing much major league talent. This opens up a trade of Edwin down the line. Overall, I think this trade is good for all teams, filling needs for each one. For the Mariners, I give this trade an A.
