Take a moment to let this photo sink in. What does it make you feel? What story does it tell you? If you’re thinking this kid is just having fun, think again.
For me, there are no words. None. Instead of trying to describe it, I can only simply check myself & try to understand my own emotions that come from it.
Everyday people make decisions on how to survive— literally. In this case, this kid is probably taking himself to school, or maybe he’s just on his way to visit a neighboring friend. Regardless of his intentions, he chooses to get in a half-barrel that barely floats, to do what he needs to do to live his life. The next photo will show you that even his teachers need education as badly as he does.
This neighborhood called “the floating village”, on lake Tonlé Sap, is a village that’s known as home to some of the poorest people in Cambodia (read: the world). Meanwhile, here in NYC, we’re easily worried about the latest fashion trend, the next foodie spot for brunch, or how much more money we want to make. Those are all good things we’re all equally entitled to... but for me, this photo captures a stronger feeling that tells me my time in advertising, and maybe even my time in America, has its days numbered (needless to say how appreciative I am of the time spent). Truth of the matter is, the world has enough money and food to support every human being alive. But why is hunger and poverty still a thing?! I can’t imagine that I’m alone in feeling this way... so if you’ve read this far, I want you to know that this is how I feel and here’s how I plan to act on it: Without a particular date yet in mind, I would like to host a brainstorming session over dinner/drinks on what we can do now to support the world in ending poverty and hunger. It might be as easy as joining an existing cause, or as difficult as starting a new music festival to raise money... no matter what, I’d love to entertain a conversation on this topic. I believe with fresh minds anything is possible.
Call me crazy, haha, but I’m dead serious. DM me, text me, call me, hit me up. I’ll collect everyone who’s interested, and we’ll lock down a date just to chat! Can’t wait to hear from y’all!
