Napoli / Naples was something else! 🤔 Our guide book had warned us that Southern Italy and especially Naples combined the best and worst of Italy.
The worst: it's poverty, high unemployment, rundown infrastructure, chaotic driving and parking, disregard for rules, dirt and rubbish, and the Mafia (in Naples the Camorra) ruling entire neighbourhoods and government sectors.
The best: 1. The liveliness and energy! Streets are buzzing, people of all ages are sitting outside in groups and laughing, kids are playing football in all the city squares, laundry is hanging from the windows... 2. The food! Pizza was apparently invented in Naples and it is amazing here, as well as many other specialities. 3. The history, arts and culture! Having been under Greek, Roman, French, Habsburg, Spanish and many other countries' rules, the city has a huge amount of history and it shows in its architecture, statues, mosaics, etc! 4. The nature! Volcanoes, mountains, the sea, blue skies, the Amalfi Coast... The region around Naples is simply stunning!
Long story short, we made sure we never took anything of value with us and then had an amazing time enjoying Naples!! 😀😁🍕👍highlights were going underground and seeing the ancient water system tunneled out of the rock, it's INSANE! And the archeological museum with its Pompeii artefacts was superb! Oh and the food. We went to the infamous pizzeria Da Michele which is almost 150 years old, is always busy and yet only serves two types of pizza, one with cheese and one without! 😍
