Enjoying my homemade bone broth with mushrooms, leeks, and two eggs for dinner. What a lovely way to spend the night, relaxing from a busy day with a show and a nice big warm bowl of soup :D. Hmmmmm..... soooooo good.
Despite a lot of nutritional fads coming and going, having a warm bowl of soup when you feel sick or sense that something coming on has always seemed to be self-evident. Chicken soup is good for the soul as they say lol, this has been known for generations upon generations, recommended by grandparents everywhere. I've even read that this tradition dates back to the 12th Century, where medical experts were prescribing soup to combat the common cold. This tradition continued and in the 16th Century, food historians discovered that when sick, having a restorative bowl of soup in Europe was common practice.
Why has soup endured? From a nutritional standpoint, there is a case to be made for its direct health benefits when not feeling your best! In part, a warm bowl of soup can provide our bodies with the dietary nutrients needed to help fight the bugs we've got. For example, with just a base of carrots, onions, and celery alone we gain micronutrients like zinc, calcium, and magnesium and vitamins such as A, C, and K. Also, the warmth of the food itself does wonders for us, from opening our nasal passages to relaxing our esophagus. Surprisingly, a warm bowl of soup also has anti-inflammatory properties (between the spices used and the nourishing relaxing state it begs us to have when enjoying it), making it the perfect antidote to calm our minds and repair our systems. How amazing is that!
All in all, soup may look humble, but that might just be what the doctor ordered :D! Enjoy :D
