This is my ultimate list of Black American films. I decided to make this one giant post instead of many individual ones. Refer to it as you please! First is Malcolm X by Spike Lee (biopic based on the life of the extraordinary Malcolm X) I just watched this one yesterday and it blew me away. Denzel Washington has to be one of the best actors on screen. Three hours long but worth every minute. 12 Years a Slave (Oscar winning movie by Steve McQueen based on the life of Solomon Northup. So powerful and moving. Get Out (I’m sure everyone has seen this one by now. So glad Jordan Peele won best screenplay for this.) He Got Game (the tale of talented young basketball star Jesus Shuttlesworth and his complicated convict father (Denzel Washington) Juice (the story of four young men in Harlem and the trouble they find themselves falling into. Tupac Shakur did a crazy good job playing Bishop in this. “Yo man, you got the juice now.”) Above the Rim (a young basketball talent is caught between two worlds. Which will he choose? Tupac Shakur stars in this too.) Paid in Full (one of the best crime movies ever to be made. Don’t argue this.) The Color Of Friendship (story of a young Black girl in 1970s America and the White South African girl who comes to stay with her family. Deals with Apartheid and racism. Back when Disney made meaningful and wholesome movies. Eve’s Bayou (one of my favorites!!! check out my previous post on it) and Love Jones (two young artists who fall in and out of love. Everyone talks about Love and Basketball being an amazing love story but Love Jones is so much better in my opinion. Be sure to check out all these incredible films. All around phenomenal performances and stories you’ll never forget. Feel free to send me some movie recommendations as well. Enjoy!!
