Q: If you had a daemon, an animal companion that represents your inner-self, what form would yours take?
HIS DARK MATERIALS came highly recommended to me from close friends, and it did not disappoint. If you think you have an idea of what these books are about, you might want to think again. I thought I had a pretty good idea, but each book in the series takes a new turn, launching the story into a brand new trajectory. I was constantly surprised at the new direction each book took. Honestly, I wish I had read these when I was younger because they are right up my alley. Strange, imaginative, magical! There are witches, magical creatures, alternate dimensions, enchanted weapons, and an assertive, strong-willed female protagonist who I just know younger me would have connected with immediately! (Curse that random third grader who told me she didn’t like the series and made me steer clear until I was 21!) In fact, I fell in love with all of the characters, from strong-willed Lyra Silvertongue to daring aeronaut Lee Scoresby to Pantalaimon the daemon to Serafina Pekkala, queen of the witches. These books are just filled with so much to love for both young and old. They do not shy away from dark and serious topics, but balance it well with magic and whimsy. All in all, I think THE GOLDEN COMPASS itself (which was, fun fact, originally titled NORTHERN LIGHTS in the UK) was my favorite, but I would recommend the entire series. There’s so much to love and enjoy in this series, so thank you @awellstockedshelf and @_jo_bartlett_ for suggesting I read them!
And to answer my own question, I'm not sure if there is a size restriction on daemons, because I'm pretty sure mine would be a hippopotamus. Or a duck. Take your pick.
