Today, Manager Dave Roberts addressed the platooning situation of Bellinger and Muncy and stated that he expects both of them to be in the lineup almost every day.
Roberts also said that he was surprised that Bellinger struggled so much against lefties in 2018, and before anyone says “bEcAuSe hE dIdN’t gEt eNoUgH aT bAts” understand that he had 210 plate appearances (109 games) in 2018 against southpaws, which was 37 more than what he faced in 2017 (87 games). Overall, Bellinger had a slash line of .226/.305/.376 with a .681 OPS, 6 HR and 25 RBI vs. lefties in 2018. As for Muncy, you can actually argue that he should’ve played even against lefties because his numbers didn’t differ very much from his numbers against righties. Muncy hit .255/.361/.529 with an .891 OPS, 8 HR and 16 RBI in 119 plate appearances (73 games) vs. lefties in 2018. It’s a smaller sample size, but he held his own when he did face lefties.
Bellinger is currently working on his approach and mechanics at Dodger Stadium, so he can have better results vs. lefties and against all pitching overall.
