Everyone said, ‘give yourself a year, culture shock takes a year.’ But nothing prepared me for the grieving process. A melancholic nostalgia, a visceral ache for home and belonging.
People don’t talk much about homesickness, or maybe they do and I’ve been so self centred I hadn’t noticed. But I hope I’ve gained a new perspective now.
If there is a new immigrant in your church, school or work place, love on them. Help them belong. Your weeks might be short and busy, but theirs are long and lonely and sometimes desperate.
