Young children are well-known to be rapid-fire question askers! According to a recent survey of 1000 UK mums, some parents are asked nearly 300 questions a day from the minute their children get up to the minute they go to sleep.
Four year old girls were determined to be, by far, the most curious. They can ask a whopping 390 questions PER DAY! That averages out to about one question every 1 minute and 56 seconds.
However, two can play at that game. Make sure you’re ALSO asking your child questions to get them thinking and responding as well.
Encourage both critical thinking and creativity in your children by asking open-ended questions. Choose discussion starters like, "If you were invisible where would you want to go?" or questions that will give you glimpses into their level of self-esteem like, “What are three words you would use to describe yourself?”
Asking no-wrong-answer questions like, "What do you think you’re good at?” can also help you gauge your child’s emotional health and see where some guidance and adjustments may be needed.
While it may be exhausting to get grilled all day, (and we all know Google does NOT have all the answers), remember that their question-asking is HEALTHY. Asking questions also proves they're naturally curious with desire to learn more about the world around them!
So the next time they start up... take a deep breath, practice patience, and hold space for that curiosity by nurturing it as best you can.
