1991 From the age of the cassette sampler! Labels would offer up songs from the upcoming year’s releases and get the hype poppin’ ‘Act Like You Know’ from #TommyBoyRecords had bangers from De La Soul, Naughty by Nature, 808 State, and a young man named #PrinceRakeem, who went back to the blueprints and reinvented himself as @RZA. ‘Basic Beats’ from #HollywoodBasic records had some underground joints from all over the map - #OrganizedKonfusion, Queen remixed by #RickRubin, the prison m.c. project #LifersGroup, and some tracks from @fujiwarahiroshi and @kantakagi’s Japanese record label Major Force. TommyBoy had the hits with ‘O.P.P.’ and Queen Latifa, but Dave #Funkenklein was on some serious deep explorations (#Stonehenge graphic?) over at Hollywood Basic - if you find the CD version of this you’ll get to hear the early @DJShadow remixes that made #JamesLavelle hunt Shadow down and ask him to make some records with #MoWax. Good times. And then we got some #Sottsass, #StanleyKubrick and other arty nonsense happening.
